Propane System Checks to Keep Your Propane System Safe and Functional All Year Round

Propane safety is a top priority for any household or business using propane as a fuel source. Understanding the types of safety checks—Leak Checks, Gas Checks, and Pressure Checks—is essential for maintaining a safe and efficient propane system. This guide explains the key differences between these checks and when each one is needed.

Leak Check

A propane Leak Check, also known as a Leak Test, is performed on a propane system to ensure there are no leaks in the distribution system. This includes the propane tank, pipelines, interior plumbing, and appliance connections.

A Leak Check is required:

    1. when starting a new service,
    2. after any service interruption,
    3. when a leak is suspected (e.g., a gas smell)
    4. During a gas check
    5. If a propane odor is suspected inside or outside the building, or near the tank
    6. If you, the customer, run out of gas
    7. If a gas line is struck during digging or construction
    8. When the service valve has been shut off at the tank
    9. If you, the customer, suspect you are going through more gas than you think you should be
    10. When a new appliance is installed or a current appliance isn’t working properly

If Delta Liquid Energy can repair the leak(s), the system will remain in service. If the leak is not repairable or not caused by a fault in the DLE owned equipment, we will take the system out of service by removing equipment, locking the tank so it cannot be refilled , and capping the gas line.

Gas Check

A propane Gas Check is performed during significant changes to a propane system, such as a new tank installation, a tank replacement, or when new owners or renters occupy a property. A Gas Check involves examining the entire gas system, including both the delivery system and the connected appliances.

Please note, the property owner must be on site during the gas check and/or tank set.

Line Pressure Test

A propane Line Pressure Test is performed on underground gas lines only. They are performed during new installations, repairs, or replacements. This test ensures that the gas line is robust and free of leaks before connecting it to the propane tank or interior systems. When a DLE service technician performs a line pressure test, we will increase the pressure on your system by three times to  confirm the line’s integrity.

Proper propane safety checks—Pressure Checks, Leak Checks, and Gas Checks—are essential for preventing accidents and ensuring the efficiency of your propane system. All three of these tests may be performed if we are setting a new tank on your property, there’s any interruption in your propane service, and/or you are installing new appliances. Always schedule these checks with a qualified DLE service technician to ensure that your system is safe, functional, and compliant with all regulations.

A FINAL IMPORTANT NOTE:

Our delivery specialists are not always equipped for, nor have the time during his scheduled route for this type of service, if the need for a Leak Check or Gas Check is discovered your system may need to be taken out of service temporarily so that we can schedule a service technician to inspect your system properly.
