Reading Your Propane Gauge is Easier Than You Think
If you own your own propane tank or aren’t signed up for regular deliveries, knowing how to read your propane tank gauge is essential, especially during cold weather or busy delivery seasons. Thankfully, your tank’s gauge makes this easier than you might think.
Where to Find the Gauge
Most standard above-ground propane tanks have a round dial gauge under the dome lid on top of the tank. This gauge shows the percentage of propane remaining in the tank, not the number of gallons.
Understanding the Numbers
- The gauge typically ranges from 0% to 80%
- 80% is considered full because tanks are only filled to 80% to allow for gas expansion
- If your gauge reads 20% or below, it’s time to order a refill!
Example Reading
Let’s say you have a 500-gallon tank, and your gauge reads 40%:
- 40% of 500 gallons = 200 gallons remaining
- That could last anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, depending on your usage
Here’s a guide to give you a general idea of how much propane each item may use.
Why It Matters
- Running out of propane can result in:
- Appliance shutoffs
- Safety leaks or pressure loss
- A required system leak test before restarting service
Tips for Staying on Top of It
- Check your gauge at least once a month (or more often in winter)
- Set a reminder to check when seasons change
- Order when your tank is around 25–30%
- Consider signing up for Will Call alerts or automatic delivery if available in your area
